Mila
Creatively known as Mila, with a passion for art – welcome to the RITES family!
What lessons you have learned so far, and how have these lessons helped you achieve your goals?
Of all the lessons I have learned growing up, one (of which I am still learning) which I feel is key to my growth as a creative, is the love of self.
I am a dark skinned black girl aiming to take up space in a society that has continuously told me that I cannot be ‘beautiful’ as I am not fair toned, or even close to it. I think that’s why I became the art – art, whether chaotic or calm/messy or beautiful, remains art.
Being aware of the fact that I am unable to mold myself to fit into the shapes of society’s aesthetics has helped me accept myself as the artwork i present myself to be.
Taking the steps to learning how to love myself has helped me get closer to achieving my goals: which is to be an all rounded creative – a model, photographer, videographer, communication designer, illustrator, stylist, make-up artist and anything i could possibly learn to enhance the skills I already have.
Self love has helped in this sense as it has given me the confidence to put myself out there and to put myself in uncomfortable positions in order to learn more lessons on the journey to who I am creating myself out to be.
Do you have a favourite quote or motto that you live by?
I don’t quite remember who said this but I live by the words:
“The presence of another woman’s beauty is not the absence of your own.”
What advice can you give to help others become the best person they can be?
The best advice I could give to help others become the best versions of themselves is: to remember to stay true to self. Your strength lies in the fact that there is nobody else in this world who is YOU – take it, and RUN with it. Do not ever doubt the process, ever!
Do you have any hobbies or interests?
My hobbies are more of a lifestyle which include creating art with photography (being behind and in front of the camera), styling, makeup, making music and anything else that allows me to express myself creatively.
